Photo: Summit of Mount Saint Helen's

I climbed this mountain in my 30's before the top blew off. In the same general area I also climbed Mount Rainer (14,410 ft/4,392 meters) in August of 1977, and Mount Adams (12,280 feet/3,743 meters) 11 months later. At age 62 I climbed Mount Saint Helen's once again so I could view the destruction. Below is Spirit Lake and Mount Rainer off in the distance. I was stunned at the difference from the previous climb. Over 1,700 feet/580 meters, of the top of the mountain was missing. My high school friend named Thomas Gadwa died here and was never found. Reportedly, he was about 10 miles from the mountain when it erupted.
